A Souped-Up Pilates Workout New York Times January 13, 2013
I've always liked the theory of Pilates. The reformer machine at the core of the workout is supposed to make for a long, lean body and help flatten the abs more effectively than stomach-toning activities like crunches and sit ups. |

Need It Now: SLT Yoga Debuts in New York It’s a conundrum for any time-crunched exercise enthusiast: You’ve always admired the physique acquired by über-yogis but are loath to suffer in meditative silence in the name of fitness when you could listen to Top 40s music and take a vigorous run instead. So, how to spend your precious one-hour time allotment of burning serious calories when getting seriously long and lean is the goal? Enter SLT Yoga, the stretch-and-burn spin-off of the culty Pilates hybrid, SLT, or Strengthen, Lengthen, Tone—except the T now stands for tunes. This revitalized (and loud) yoga practice involves an athletic flow through a dynamic Vinyasa series while smart, perfectly edited playlists drive up your energy and drown out the stresses of the day.

Music Monday: Tunes for Your Strengthen and Lengthen Yoga Session
For someone who’s gotten used to the nonstop sounds of NYC, doing a yoga class in complete silence is, well, a foreign concept. Which is why I was glad to hear that SLT Yoga officially opened their doors in NYC this May. The offspring of Pilates-based SLT (Strengthen Lengthen and Tone) combines Vinyasa yoga with popular tunes to sustain and enhance your energy throughout the hour-long routine. I worked up a sweat while giving my muscles a much-needed stretch session and my mind a feel-good recharge. |

Fitness Diaries: Get Fit Fast
Hot Yoga, by Elisa Lipsky-KaraszI’m doing jumping jacks, dripping sweat, to Britney Spears’s “Big Fat Bass.” “Sprint! Fold! Chaturanga! Down Dog!” my teacher orders as he casually adjusts the thermostat. It reads 110 degrees. I wonder if I’m hallucinating. This isn’t your usual holistic yoga class. This is Pure Core Hot, an hour of non- stop cardio, one of several heated classes at Pure Yoga, a superluxe fitness emporium in New York City. And at Pure, “hot” means 98 to 110 degrees.

Cardio, Strength Training And Pilates Rolled Into One Lauren Glassberg, Eyewitness News NEW YORK (WABC) – Want to get more out of your workout? Now there’s a fun routine that can help you reach your goals.
S.L.T. is a three-letter workout that can make a girl cry. The letters stand for strengthen lengthen and tone. The class is only 50 minutes, but it’s precisely scheduled to get your body working. Everything is done on or around the Megaformer, an exercise machine similar to something you’d see in a pilates class. Amanda Freeman opened SLT after taking similar classes on Megaformers in Los Angeles. Each set lasts a minute, and you work just about everything. There are thousands of moves made difficult by springs in the Megaformer. They create the tension. The more springs, the harder the move.

SPX Fitness: We Tried It! If you like Pilates sessions on the Reformer, then you’ll love SPX Fitnessclasses on a Megaformer. I recently tried one at SLT: Strengthen, Lengthen, Tone here in New York City. The studio describes the classes as “the love child of Pilates, cardio, and strength-training”—and I totally agree. During the 50-minute small-group session (only 10 students per session) I did lunges, hydrants, rows, side planks, and more—all on my own Megaformer. (The machine resembles a traditional Pilates Reformer, but it has more springs and pulleys, a longer gliding carriage, and two sets of bars.) Thanks to the quick pace, my heart rate spiked up and I was sweating. And by the end of my last set, my legs were shaking—a sign of a good workout in my book. Meet The Megaformer: The SLT Workout Is Like Pilates On Crack Last week, in a fit of misguided exercise bravado, we agreed to try out SLT—a.k.a. Strength, Length, and Tone—the latest exercise craze to cross the country from Los Angeles, opening its first New York City studio in midtown a few weeks back. We should have known we were in trouble the minute we walked into class—everyone else, all four other people in the room, were talking animatedly about how they’re Tracy Anderson-devotees. Us, well, we’re better versed at the walk-to-Momofuku-Milk-Bar-once-a-week school of fitness.

Fall Into Shape Vital Juice co-founder Amanda Freeman brings her popular hybrid workout from Los Angeles to midtown. Similar to classes like SPX Fitness or Pilates Plus, Freeman calls her incarnation “SLT,” short for Strengthen, Lengthen, and Tone. The 50-minute class ($40) is a mix of cross-training, cardio, and Pilates that’s done on what Freeman describes as a “souped-up Reformer.” Opening September 6

Be In The Fitness Know The Situation can have GTL (gym, tan, laundry). There’s a much hotter acronym in town: SLT (strengthen, lengthen, tone). And until yesterday, it was available only on the west coast.
This is a VBD (very big deal). The amazing workout is so powerful that one of Vital Juice’s co-founders scheduled cross-country trips around it. And finally…she launched a studio in NYC!
SLT boasts 50-minute classes on the legendary Megaformer™ machine (think of a souped-up Pilates Reformer with more straps, bands and cutouts), which targets the entire body while developing long, lean muscles. The workout is a mash-up of cardio training, weight-bearing activity and Pilates. Our muscles shook even during the warm-up. And we loved this oblique toning Mermaid Crunch exercise.
Ready to Megatransform your workout? Send this email to a friend for a chance to win a spot in a free Vital Juice-reader only SLT class on September 12 at 7PM. Classes are limited to 10 people and winners will be chosen at random. Check out the schedule here.
SLT in NYC…OMG.

Souped-Up Pilates Following in the footsteps of Barry’s Bootcamp, another boutique LA-import has just hit New York. This time, it’s in the form of SLT (Strengthen Lengthen, Tone), a Pilates-meets-cardio-and-strength-training workout brought east by Vital Juice co-founder Amanda Freeman. We can’t wait to see if New Yorkers love the method, done on Megaformers (Pilates Reformers on steroids), as much as they love Barry’s. Stay tuned for a Q&A with Freeman next week!

SLT: Amanda Freeman Brings Her Favorite Workout To New York After tiring of the fact that her favorite workout was not available in New York, last week fitness aficionado Amanda Freeman opened the doors to New York’s newest boutique fitness studio, SLT (Strengthen, Lengthen, Tone).Don’t be confused by the name: it’s not a barre workout. SLT’s studio is lined with Megaformers, an uber-modern version of the Pilates’ Reformer. And the workout, which has huge following in Los Angeles, is described as what would result if “cardio, strength training, and Pilates had a baby.”
We caught up with the Freeman, the co-founder of healthy newsletter Vital Juice, to find out why she decided to bring the method to the Big Apple:
